Sticking to your roots

Living in a new country means the beginning of a new life for many. It allows us to put our past behind us. For the Bhutanese specifically, it gives us a chance to escape from the hardships. However, I see it as a means of strength. We should not run away from the past, but instead use it to further motivate us into accomplishing our goals. So stick to your roots, and let them transform you into being a better person today.

The past, no matter good or bad, has made us into who we are. It is important that we retain some of our customs and not forget our roots. Although we desire to advance ourselves and blend in with a different culture, our traditions define who we are, and we must always hold on to them. I completely agree with the idea of learning and changing to keep up with the modern world. In a rapidly evolving era, it is vital that a person be on par with their surroundings. We are expected to know of the newest movie, the latest technology on the market, or of the controversial novel that just hit the book stores. Society requires us to learn and change.

Change can result from social activity as well. Often, you might find yourself transfiguring into a completely different individual. But that is perfectly acceptable, and normal. Hang out with your peers. Feel free to participate in the newest “hip” thing to do. Go ahead and pursue the most current of clothing trends. But while you’re doing this, spare a little of your time for the things that have made you into who you are. It doesn’t have to be long, and there are many ways to do just this. A concept as simple as spending time with your family should suffice. I would list other ideas, but I’m sure you can think of them yourselves.
